Nathaniel Hepler is a native of Malvern, Pennsylvania and earned his Bachelor of Music from Philadelphia’s prestigious Curtis Institute of Music. There Nathaniel studied with Frank Kaderabek, former Principal Trumpet of the Philadelphia Orchestra, and David Bilger, current Principal Trumpet of the Philadelphia Orchestra. He was the recipient of a merit-based full-tuition scholarship, and held The Institute’s Lester Henry Grundy Fellowship. Nathaniel earned his Master of Music in Orchestral Performance degree from the Manhattan School of Music, where he studied with Mark Gould, former Principal Trumpet of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra.
Nathaniel has served as principal trumpet in many ensembles, including the Symphony Orchestra of the Curtis Institute of Music, and the Symphonies and Orchestras of the Manhattan School of Music, among others. He is a substitute with many ensembles in the Philadelphia and New York areas, including ensembles such as the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia, the Delaware Symphony Orchestra, Symphony in C (formerly the Haddonfield Symphony), the New World Symphony, the Allentown Symphony, and the United States Military Academy Band at West Point, among others.
In addition to his performance honors, he was a finalist in the United States Air Force Young Artists Competition, the Philadelphia Orchestra’s Concerto Competition, the Music Academy of the West Concerto Competition, and placed 1st in the Pottstown Symphony Concerto Competition, who he later soloed with on Tartini’s Concerto in D. He has also been guest soloist with the Tenth Chamber Orchestra, performing Copland’s Quiet City, the Manhattan School of Music Chamber Group, playing Brandenburg’s Concerto No. 2, and most recently performed Handel’s “Let the Bright Seraphim” in Weill Hall at Carnegie Hall in New York.
Nathaniel has been invited to perform in master classes with such distinguished artists as the American Brass Quintet, Raymond Mase, the Canadian Brass, David Krauss, Jack Sutte, John Wallace, David Bilger, Josef Burgstaller, Edward Carroll, Paul Merkelo, The Concertgebouw brass section, Jens Lindemann, the Meridian Arts Ensemble, Jeff Curnow, Steve Hendrickson, and Christopher Martin.
He has also performed under the baton of some of the world’s most renowned conductors including James Conlon, Christoph van Dohnyani, Christoph Eschenbach, Kurt Mazur, Sir Roger Norrington, Peter Oundjian, Sir Simon Rattle, Robert Spano, Michael Stern, Jeffrey Tate, Yuri Temrikonov, and David Zinmann. Nathaniel has participated in summer festivals including the The Lake Placid Institute, traveled on a five-city tour to China with the Philadelphia Youth Orchestra, Festival Dei Due Mondi: The Festival of Two Worlds (Spoleto Festival), Italy having been invited by the Julliard School of Music, the Aspen Music Festival, the Music Academy of the West, the National Repertory Orchestra, and most recently the Spoleto USA Festival Orchestra. Mr. Hepler is an active freelancer in the Philadelphia and New York City areas. |
