trombone

Since graduating from Juilliard in 1990, Tom Hutchinson has had a very diverse solo, chamber music, orchestral and teaching career. During the 1991-92 academic year he was professor of trombone at L'Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome, Italy. Soon after returning to New York from abroad, he became a member of the Naumberg chamber music award-winning Saturday Brass Quintet, with whom he toured extensively throughout the U.S., and gave many world, U.S., and New York premieres of works by compsers such as Richard Danielpour, Ned Rorem, Aaron Kernis, John Harbison, and many others.

As a soloist, he performed and recorded the world premiere of Wendy Chambers's "Mass for Mass Trombones", and gave the American premiere of Kalevi Aho's "Symphony No. 9 for Trombone and Orchestra". Since 1992, he has performed regularly with virtually every major orchestra in the New York metropolitan area, as well as with the Cleveland Orchestra, the Minnesota Orchestra, and the Kirov Orchestra, and since 1994 has been performing and touring regularly with the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra. Tom joined the New York City Opera Orchestra in 2002, where he serves as principal trombone. He has taught at the Juilliard Pre-College, Montclair State University, Princeton University, Manhattan School of Music, and is currently a member of the trombone faculty of New York University.
