S.S. Hangover

Creative Time and Central Park Conservancy present Ragnar Kjartansson’s S.S. Hangover (debuted at the 55th Venice Biennale), featuring a boat which sails in a continuous loop around the Harlem Meer, manned by a Metropolis brass ensemble in black-tie attire, performing music by composer Kjartan Sveinsson (formerly of Sigur Rós), which he created specifically for this work.

The S.S. Hangover, a haphazard hybrid of Greek, Icelandic and Venetian ship design, was originally a 1934 wooden fishing boat from Reykjavík that the artist transformed into a remake of a theatrical boat that appeared on dry land in a swanky party scene in the film Remember Last Night? (1935). Sailing under the flag of a winged fat Pegasus–one that Kjartansson regards as a symbol for the artist struggling to reach sublime heights–this performative sculpture has an air of celebration and defeat to it. Ragnar Kjartansson’s featured artwork S.S. Hangover was debuted at the 55th Venice Biennale (2013).

About Drifting in Daylight

Creative Time and Central Park Conservancy unveil Drifting in Daylight, a dreamy springtime pathway of art winding through the world’s most iconic park.

Drifting in Daylight includes performative, participatory, and perceptual work by artists Ragnar Kjartansson, Spencer Finch, Alicia Framis, Nina Katchadourian, Marc Bamuthi Joseph, David Levine, Karyn Olivier, and Lauri Stallings + glo.

As the centerpiece of Central Park Conservancy’s 35th Anniversary celebration, this free public exhibition aims to draw visitors into the park’s beautiful north end, much of which has been expertly restored by the Conservancy. The six-weekend show will tempt visitors to transcend their busy lives, losing themselves along a playful trail of sensory experiences.
