Thomas Boulton
Trumpet

Thomas Boulton, trumpet, is an active freelance musician and educator in the New York City area. Most recently in September 2010, he performed live before a crowd of over 25,000 and internationally broadcasted live on television with the New York city based Philharmonic Orchestra of the Americas in an outdoor concert celebrating the 200th Anniversary of Mexican independence in Mexico City. In 2008, he gave one of the first performances in the newly renovated Alice Tully Hall in New York City with the Orchestra at St. Luke's and Riverside Choral Society.

In 2009, Boulton was invited to perform by the legendary Maestro Lorin Maazel (former conductor New York Philharmonic, Cleveland Orchestra, Pittsburgh Symphony, Vienna State Opera, Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra) as principal trumpet in the inaugural 2009 Castleton Music Festival, an exclusive two-week music festival held on Maazel's 600-acre estate in Castleton, Virginia. In January 2010, Boulton recorded on the Sony Classical label with the New York City based Philharmonic Orchestra of the Americas. The 2-disc set Mi Alma Mexicana features over 200 years of Mexican orchestral music and continues to rank highly in worldwide music charts today. In an album released in March 2010, Boulton can be heard performing solo cornet with acclaimed international soloist Allen Vizzutti and the New Amsterdam Brass Band. An avid supporter of chamber music, Boulton appears frequently with many projects, including Artemis Chamber Ensemble and Metropolis Ensemble, first appearing in their premier performance of The Rite: Remixed in 2008.

Boulton has earned the Doctor of Musical Arts degree from Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey with a dissertation entitled "Landmarks in the Evolution of Trumpet Design and Compositional Style from the Late Baroque to the Early Romantic Period." He previously attended Eastern Michigan University (BM) and the Manhattan School of Music (MM).

Primary teachers include Kevin Cobb (American Brass Quintet, Juilliard School), Thomas V. Smith (New York Philharmonic), Carter Eggers (Professor of Trumpet, Eastern Michigan University), and Michael Bowman (Grand Rapids Symphony). He has also had individual instruction from Mark Gould (Retired Principal Trumpet, Metropolitan Opera Orchestra), David Krauss (Principal Trumpet, MET Orchestra), Robert Sullivan (Principal Trumpet, Cincinnati Symphony & Pops), Philip Myers (Principal Horn, New York Philharmonic), Ray Mase (Principal Trumpet, New York City Ballet, American Brass Quintet, Juilliard School), Jim Ross (Second Trumpet, Metropolitan Opera Orchestra), Toby Hanks (Tuba, New York Brass Quintet & New York City Ballet), and Per Brevig (Retired Principal Trombone, MET Orchestra). Boulton can be heard on the Sony Classical, Mark Masters, and Naxos Classical Recording Labels.
