Ray Lustig: Compose Thyself

Jolle Greenleaf, soprano; TENET, guest vocal ensemble — world premiere

In the spirit of composers during the Baroque era, who frequently re-purposed existing music, composer Raymond J. Lustig has taken a cantata by Bach of which only the soprano part remains and woven a completely new work around it. Bach's solo line will be performed by soprano Jolle Greenleaf with additional vocals by TENET, one of New York's preeminent vocal ensembles. Learn more...

Vivian Fung: Violin Concerto

Kristin Lee, solo violin — world premiere

Inspired by the shimmering energy of the Balinese gamelan, Vivian Fung has written a violin concerto that draws on sights, sounds, and memories of Bali. Ms. Fung's concerto joins exotic sounds and harmonies, exultant rhythms and intense lyricism into a work that imaginatively explores a world at the other end of our own. Learn more...

Andres/Mozart: Piano Concerto No. 26 "Coronation"

Timothy Andres, solo piano — encore performance

The score to Mozart's 26th piano concerto is missing most of the left-hand piano part. Metropolis Ensemble commissioned composer/pianist Timothy Andres in 2010 to re-imagine the entire left-hand part in his own 21st Century style. The premiere was described by music critic Alex Ross as "startling... mesmerizing... a fine display of creative bravado." Learn more...

Compose Thyself is a Metropolis Ensemble commission with funds provided by New York State Council on the Arts. Violin Concerto is a Metropolis Ensemble commission with funds generously provided by the De Rosa Foundation. Piano Concerto No. 26 "Coronation" is a Metropolis Ensemble 2010 commission.
