Daniel Spiegel
piano

Daniel Spiegel's multifaceted musical talent has led him to explore many different aspects of being a pianist. He is equally at home as a solo performer and as a collaborative artist, and he has performed extensively in chamber and orchestral ensembles. Spiegel is also deeply committed to the performance of the music of promising young composers, as well as the music of established figures in contemporary music. The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review praised him for his "cleanly chiseled but sensitive pianism" in performing the works of George Crumb and Lee Hyla, while the Baltimore Sun described a performance of Boulez and Stravinsky as "excellent."

Spiegel has recently completed his Master of Music degree in piano performance at the Juilliard School, where he studied with Joseph Kalichstein. Spiegel earned his Bachelor of Music degree at Peabody Conservatory, concurrently earning his Bachelor of Arts degree in English at Johns Hopkins University. He has won numerous competitions and awards, leading to performances with the National Symphony Orchestra, the Guilford Symphony, the Montgomery Symphony, and the National Chamber Orchestra, and he has given solo recitals at Carnegie Hall's Weill Recital Hall.

Spiegel performs extensively as a collaborative artist with both instrumentalists and vocalists and he has worked with artists such as Joshua Bell and Edgar Meyer. His performances of violin and piano works in Ottawa and Montreal were recorded by CBC for broadcast throughout Canada and Europe. He has also performed chamber music at venues such as Alice Tully Hall and the Kennedy Center's Terrace Theater. He tours often throughout Canada and the United States with violinist Susanne Hou and he performs with both Hou and cellist Sarah Carter as pianist of the Fireborne Trio.

An avid proponent of new music, Spiegel has commissioned, premiered, and performed many works by peers such as Ryan Anthony Francis, Daniel Thomas Davis, Avner Dorman, Adam Schoenberg, and Benjamin C. S. Boyle, and he has performed with the Peabody Camerata and New Juilliard Ensemble as both soloist and ensemble player. He has also served as pianist for the Aspen Contemporary Ensemble, a chamber ensemble dedicated exclusively to new music. He is currently a member of the Pittsburgh New Music Ensemble, a contemporary ensemble which presents new works in innovative and exciting ways.
